If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me about alternative investments, I'd be dollar-cost-averaging that into index funds.

Ha! There’s a place for alternatives for sure…but not in the way most people yolo into them.

Maybe if AI-managed is "alternative"?

Boring portfolios tend to build interesting wealth. The real edge is sticking with them.

This is spot on. The only thing that I am advocating is for people to actually know what companies are in the ETFs in which they are investing. In particular, I recommend divesting from the entire S&P 500, because otherwise, you own some intensely bad actors: Exxon Mobil, Tesla, Nvidia, Microsoft, Walmart, Chevron, UnitedHealth Group ... the list goes on.

Shameless plug: I have a Substack where I discuss how to divest from the bad actors without blowing up your retirement. It's called "Letters from a Bostonian": https://wdrury.substack.com/p/divest-from-the-s-and-p-500-now

Wow, that is hands down THE best article on investing I have ever read. Spot on. Every word of it. I have lived all of that and yes I AM BORED and I love every minute of it.

Are there funds that strive to stick to climate-friendly companies and technologies? I feel like investing without any preferences is potentially risky too.

There are some. I have a whole essay on socially responsible investing that may interest you: https://moneychangeseverything.substack.com/p/ethical-investing?r=n2z7u&utm_medium=ios
